Boating & Water Sports

Licences and registration for boats, canoes and paddleboards depend on your craft and where you use it.

Last reviewed 5 October 2026

Apply through the official authority: Canal & River Trust (inland waterways in England and Wales). HobbyTrade UK does not issue licences or certificates.

1.Overview

UK requirements for boats and water sports depend on the type of craft, whether you are on inland or coastal waters, the specific location, and whether the use is leisure, competition or commercial.

2.Who needs it?

On many canals and rivers, all boats, including canoes, kayaks and paddleboards, need a licence or registration from the navigation authority, such as the Canal & River Trust or the Environment Agency (for example on the River Thames). Membership of some governing bodies, such as British Canoeing, can include a waterways licence. On the coast, leisure boating in UK waters generally does not need a personal licence, but local byelaws, harbour rules and launch fees may apply. Commercial use and some larger craft have additional requirements set by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

3.What does it allow you to do?

A waterways licence allows your craft to use the waterways covered by that authority. It is not a skills qualification. Training, such as RYA courses, is strongly recommended and may be needed abroad.

4.How to apply

  1. Identify who manages the water you plan to use.
  2. Check whether your type of craft needs a licence or registration there.
  3. Apply online with the relevant authority, or consider governing-body membership that includes a licence.
  4. Check local byelaws, harbour rules and launch requirements before going out.

5.What you may need

  • Details of your craft (type, length, any registration number)
  • Third-party insurance, which is often required for powered boats
  • A Boat Safety Scheme certificate for many powered or residential boats on inland waterways
  • Payment

8.Renewal

Most waterway licences are annual or short-term and must be renewed with the issuing authority.
