1.Overview

Rules for air weapons differ across the UK. In England and Wales, most lower-powered air rifles and air pistols do not need a certificate. In Scotland you need an Air Weapon Certificate from Police Scotland. In Northern Ireland, air weapons above a low power level need a firearm certificate from the PSNI.

2.Who needs it?

England and Wales: no certificate is needed for air rifles up to 12 ft lbs or air pistols up to 6 ft lbs. Above those limits, a firearm certificate is needed. Scotland: almost all air weapons need an Air Weapon Certificate. Northern Ireland: check the PSNI's requirements. Some air weapons are prohibited.

3.What does it allow you to do?

Where a certificate is required, it allows you to hold air weapons under its conditions. Wherever you are, you may only shoot where you have permission, and never so that pellets leave the land.
