How to Clean and Store Fishing Rods After a Session

5 October 2026 · 3 min read

Keep your fishing rods in good condition with practical steps for cleaning blanks, checking guides, drying handles and storing sections safely.

1. Start with a gentle clean

Mud, groundbait and salt can collect on a fishing rod without being particularly obvious. A quick clean after each session helps prevent stubborn deposits and gives you a chance to spot damage before your next trip. You only need fresh water, a soft cloth, a soft brush and somewhere safe to leave the rod to dry.

Remove the reel, rig and any hooks before starting. Wipe the blank with a damp cloth, working carefully around the guides rather than pulling the cloth against them. For stubborn grime, use a little mild soapy water, then wipe away the residue with a clean damp cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, strong solvents and pressure washers.

After sea fishing, gently rinse exposed surfaces with fresh water to remove salt. Do not deliberately flush water into hollow sections or soak the whole rod. Follow the manufacturer’s care advice where available, particularly for unusual finishes or handle materials.

2. Clean and check the line guides

Line guides deserve particular attention because a damaged insert can abrade line. Use a soft brush to loosen dirt around each frame and foot, then wipe clean. Look closely under good lighting for cracked inserts, sharp edges, bent frames and lifting thread wraps. Do not try to straighten a damaged guide by force.

Gently pass a cotton bud around the inside of each guide, including the tip ring. Fibres catching on one spot can indicate a rough edge, although this is only a basic check, not proof that a guide is sound. If you find damage or remain unsure, stop using the rod until a tackle repairer has assessed it. Replacing a guide is preferable to repeatedly damaging your line.

3. Look after joints, handles and reel seats

Separate multi-piece rods with a straight, controlled pull, gripping the blank close to the joint rather than using the guides as handles. Follow any model-specific instructions for stubborn joints. Once apart, wipe mating surfaces clean and dry: trapped grit can scratch them and interfere with the fit.

Do not automatically oil or grease rod joints. Different joint designs have different requirements, so use only treatments recommended by the manufacturer. On telescopic rods, remove dirt from exposed sections before collapsing them, and never force a section that feels gritty or stuck.

Clean cork and EVA handles gently with a damp cloth and mild soap if needed. Avoid aggressive scrubbing that removes material, and leave any loose cork filler alone. Brush grit from the reel-seat threads and check that the locking parts move freely without forcing them.

4. Dry fully before putting rods away

Let sections air-dry in a ventilated room, away from radiators and other direct heat sources. Pay attention to handles and joints, where moisture can linger. A rod sleeve that became wet on the bank should dry separately; putting a clean rod into a damp sleeve defeats much of the effort.

Store rods in a rack that supports them without bending the blank or loading the tip. Keep them away from heavy items, doorways and prolonged direct sunlight. For transport, use a suitable sleeve or protective tube, securing sections so they cannot knock together. Make sure the tip cannot be trapped when closing a zip, boot or car door.

5. Keep a simple condition record

Before storing your rod, note any repairs or areas needing attention. A few clear photographs of the guides, joints and handle make it easier to track wear. If you later sell it, describe those details honestly and photograph any defects rather than trying to disguise them.
