Buying Second-Hand Fishing Tackle: What to Check
20 September 2026 · 5 min read
Rods, reels and bite alarms — a simple checklist before you buy used fishing gear.
Rods
Check every section for cracks, especially near the joints and ferrules. Run a cotton bud through the rings — snags mean a cracked insert.
Reels
Ask for a video of the reel turning. It should be smooth and quiet with a consistent drag. Check the spool edge for chips that can damage line.
Electronics
For bite alarms and receivers, ask for a video showing them paired and working. Check battery compartments for corrosion.
