Buying a Used Motocross Bike Stand: Lift and Stability Checks
9 October 2026 · 3 min read
Check lift height, frame contact, welds and moving parts before buying a second-hand motocross stand for your garage or paddock.
1. Choose the right type of stand
A motocross stand makes cleaning, wheel removal and routine checks much easier, but a cheap used one is only good value if it supports your bike securely. Before browsing, decide whether you want a fixed-height stand, a foot-operated lift stand or a larger workshop lift. Each needs a different amount of space and effort to use.
A fixed stand usually means lifting the bike onto its platform yourself. A foot-operated model slides underneath and raises the bike using a lever, although operating effort varies. Workshop lifts are bulkier and may have additional securing requirements. Look for an identifiable make and model so you can check the instructions, rated capacity and availability of replacement parts rather than relying on the seller’s description alone.
2. Measure your bike before arranging a viewing
Check the clearance beneath your bike with both wheels on level ground, then compare it with the stand’s lowered height. Allow for any bash plate or other fitted parts. A stand that only just fits on a smooth garage floor may be awkward to position on uneven paddock ground. Ask for actual measurements rather than accepting “fits all motocross bikes”.
The raised height matters too: it needs to provide the clearance required for your intended jobs. Check the bike manufacturer’s guidance for suitable support points. The platform must contact the intended load-bearing area without pressing on an exhaust, linkage or vulnerable engine component. A wide platform is not automatically better if its shape clashes with your bike’s underside.
3. Inspect the structure and contact surfaces
Start with the legs, feet, platform and welds. Look for bent tubing, cracks, separated welds, heavy corrosion and elongated fixing holes. Fresh paint is not necessarily a problem, but ask what prompted it and inspect the surrounding areas closely. Walk away from unexplained structural repairs or visible distortion: a stand is not the place to gamble on someone else’s welding.
Place the empty stand on a known flat, firm surface and check whether it rocks. Examine the platform pad for missing sections, loose adhesive or an oily surface that could let the bike slip. Check that feet and end caps are present where intended. Worn pads may be replaceable, but confirm the correct parts are available before treating the damage as a simple fix.
4. Test the lift and lowering action safely
For a lifting stand, operate it unloaded first, keeping fingers away from pivots and pinch points. Check for loose fasteners, excessive sideways play, sticking joints and a bent operating pedal. If the model has a latch, stop or locking device, make sure it works as described in the manufacturer’s instructions. On hydraulic models, inspect for leaks and damaged rods.
If an appropriate loaded demonstration is possible, use a compatible bike on firm, level ground and follow both manufacturers’ guidance. Have the seller demonstrate controlled lifting and lowering, checking that the platform stays steady and the mechanism holds as intended. Never put yourself beneath a bike supported only by a stand, and do not improvise a test with a person standing on the platform.
5. Weigh up value and plan collection
Compare the total cost with a suitable new alternative, allowing for replacement pads, missing hardware and collection. Ask for clear photographs of the underside, welds, model label and lifting mechanism before travelling. A bulky stand can be awkward to post, so confirm its dimensions and weight. For collection, lower it fully and secure any moving parts for transport.
